Bankruptcy Court OKs Hancock Plan To Close Stores, Hold Sales

BALDWYN, MISS. - A federal bankruptcy judge in Delaware has approved Hancock Fabrics' plan to close 134 stores across the county.

US Bankruptcy Judge Brenden L. Shannon signed an order Thursday that will allow the going-out-of-business sales to begin immediately.

Great American, a consultant out of Woodland Hills, Calif., will oversee management of Hancock's closing sales, according to court documents. Hancock Fabrics, based in Baldwyn, negotiated terms with Great American in February, about a month before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Chapter 11 is reorganization bankruptcy, usually involving a corporation or partnership. A Chapter 11 debtor usually proposes a plan of reorganization to keep its business alive and pay creditors over time.

Court records show Shannon agreed to set aside $165,000 for tax agencies that objected to the going-out-of-business sale. Many of the agencies were in Texas and filed objections during the previous two weeks. County, city, state and school districts had asked the court to set aside proceeds of the going-out-of-business sales for future tax bills.

On leases and rental property, the court approved an agreement between Hancock and Keen Realty, LLC of Great Neck, NY. Keen will oversee management of nonresidential leases and other properties held by Hancock...
